∆ Painting Outside ∆

The walls speak to me,
They have stories to tell, just like me.
They've become my friends.
The cracks and bumps match the memories on my skin.

My mind is ripe with direction.
I listen to the mumbles of the brick and respond with an ear full of colour.
It's a discussion, not a speech.
I'm a participant, not a dictator.

Too much space is taken and not asked for.
Images invade and interfere with our insides and insights.
We forget before we even know.
We are disrupted when we flow,
Straining our neck to look within.

I will remove the shackles off your eyes,
With five full fingers and one full heart.
The paint,
The shapes,
The colours,
Will give life to a space seen but forgotten.

I listen to what should be heard,
To the feelings and not the words.

Creation is the path, not the purpose.
I will follow it to the horizon,
And If I'm lucky, I will get lost.

And on the inside by Nicci St. Bruce

Heavy

How much flesh must I carry for you to see me?
How many thoughts must I balance on my head,
Piled high,
For your eyes to peer into me?

Are the things I say not tasty enough?
I can only speak in between breaths and these days the air is absent from my lungs.
The struggle of carrying what I never chose to pick up, weighs on my back.

If I could say three words, they would be I love... me.
Encouragement is a myth posted on billboards and as I walk, they scream at me
To be,
and not to be,
What I want to be,
How I should be.

Ants crawl out of the openings in my palms and do a dance.
They are happier than those who named them.
They play their roll.
Nature has accepted them.

Maybe one day I will be an ant.

Bike Ride to Lac Mégantic

Tomorrow morning I'm going on a ride with a bunch of people to Lac Mégantic in order to raise money and support a community that has been devastated by an incredible tragedy. I've been watching and reading a lot of the news and have felt a sort of helpless pit in my stomach. I feel like we have an enormous battle to fight when it comes to balancing what we all do on this planet and trying to figure out how to stay alive without obliterating the earth. We've built the system around us to support a lifestyle that is not sustainable and if we don't change some things, who knows what other tragedies will happen. Im not a reporter or an expert of any kind but i do know how to do two things well, biking and art. I'd like to contribute to helping this town rebuild with the resources i have and so I'm going to create artwork throughout my trip to and from Lac Mégantic. I'd like to then sell this artwork and give the money to the city. This may come out as a print , drawings, poems or other forms of art. I'd like to raise at least $600 which is about $1 for every kilometer I will ride on this trip ( there and back) . if you'd like to donate money to support my cause, you can either email me at cyclebird@gmail.com , in person or just donate directly to red cross and tell me how much you've donated and I'll add it to my taly. If you donate over $30 through me, i will give you a piece of art that i've created on this trip. Thanks you for reading this and although it's not a huge contribution, I feel an obligation not only as an artist to find a way to give back but also as a citizen of the world who wants to make a differencw some how.

It's a journey

I'd like to write things over your heart,
As many have done before.
Only this time, I'll leave a place for you to put your own words in,
It's your story,
not mine.

I'd like to relax around you but your scarecrow skin is working.
I'm not able to walk, so let's run.

Our steps were laid in the park bench kisses and the broken, bent, blades of grass that our bodies are responsible for.

There are too many words I need to say to you,
and they wont fit in my mouth anymore.
If I'm not careful, they will spill out in front of someone closer.
They will never be heard the same way though, your ear is the one that heard the start of this story.

I picked shards of you off the floor, but they were the ones you didn't need.
You've transformed your cage into a cocoon and have brought colour into this world with your spread wings.

It's too easy to kill a fly, I want to catch it.
It's life is short, but so has been our story.
Who am I to judge?

Longevity is not truth, out hands are.
These words aren't true, your face is.

I'd peel your leopard print skin off so I can stop the fear,
you can have it back when you show me your true animal.

Why this cyclist's $651 ticket makes no sense

Yesterday Chris Lloyd was given a $651.00 ticket for warning other cyclists that there was a police trap at an intersection. I'm not only disgusted at this because of the obvious over exaggeration of the charge, but this is also the most backwards approach to public safety/ keeping people safe I've ever heard of.

Let's break it down;
The police are there to enforce the laws because there needs to be order and safety on the streets. Right? Okay, so cyclists need to obey the laws in order for this order and safety to be maintained. Right?
I get it.
Is every cyclist breaking the law?
No.
So how did Chris Lloyd actually interfere with the police doing their job? Their job at that moment was to give tickets to those breaking the law. Right?
So for him to interfere with their job means they knew something he didn't or their job was different than that of ticketing those breaking the law or public safety and education.
There's no way of knowing whether or not the cyclists Chris told about the trap, were going to break the law.
So how did he "interfere with their job" exactly? Oh that's right, because they didn't want to help keep people safe, their JOB was to ticket people at high volume in order to bring in some cash.

The Police giving a ticket to Chris perfectly illustrates what kind of motives the police had with their trap and I can't help but feel this is even more of a sting given that recently, the SPVM agreed to go easier on cyclists and not ticket them as aggressively.

And let's say that it's an intersection that seems to have a high volume of cyclist infractions, why not spend the time finding out why and fixing the infrastructure so it stops happening? Tickets don't solve problems, they only bring attention to them. No one feels educated with a $41 ticket in their hand, they feel frustrated. Most people have good intentions. I don't know anyone who wants to be dangerous and put other people's lives at risk

I am not here to argue whether cyclists should be ticketed or not. I'll take a ticket after blowing a red light with a smile. However, this type of interaction with police  is not about telling people what is or isn't safe and making public space better for everyone, it's about telling people to shut up when they know what is right and moving to the side so that "business as usual" can run smoothly.

I think it's a shame considering that we've come so far here with our cycling battles and that Montreal has entered a new age of being even more of a cycle-friendly city. When I see this type of thing, I think to myself " What could we actually be doing with our time, money and ressources?" I can personally think of a few intersections that could use some maintenance and attention and would actually do more for public safety than any ticket would do. Maybe instead of stationing police to set traps, the city should station pick up trucks full of asphalt and people with shovels to fix pot holes.

This insane and disproportionate behaviour needs to stop and I'm glad Chris went to the media about this because these things are unacceptable and don't help anyone or anything but the city's bank account.

Forgive

Forgiveness is not a sacrifice, Forgiveness is a liberation.

A moment doesn't define a person, so don't let a person define you.
In every moment you don't chose, you are not the moments of others,
So why in times of weakness do you use the anger as jagged crutches to walk with?
Your deserve better.

You create this space, it is yours to build and REbuild.
It is yours to manage as you would your time,
And now it's time to put this to sleep.

Let the blinders be your guide and run where it's dark.
In this moment, fear is the hand you need to grab.
Hold on tight. Feel the skin of your future.
It is rough,
but you are tough.

You've come this far, walking barefoot on broken glass floors,
See now how far you'll go when you've cleared the shards away from your mind,
And can rest by a monument built to your new path.

What is Graffiti?

Graffiti for me is not necessarily what you are doing but how your doing it. I think that it's a combination of defiance and expression and is more than just doing one or a few acts of vandalism. It's a way of life that is a constant rejection of what society and institutions have created and trying to create a place for yourself. It's also a serious attempt at trying to express your discomfort in public space.
Most graffiti artists feel like they aren't being noticed in the world and so they feel like they need to make themselves visible by claiming public space. Other people do it because they love the creative aspect of creating images and focus more on the artistic aspect of it and not the brutal vandalism. Everyone who does graffiti is definitely screwed up in the head in one way or another, some people are just more screwed up then others.

This is where street art comes in. Street art is a very consumer friendly/ people friendly way of selling vandalism. It's a way for people to make light of a crime and to celebrate it. It's also a way for people to market the hell out of themselves without actually doing much.
Street art has become a trend world wide and much of the core principles of graffiti have been diluted and lost because of this phenomenon. The macho-ness of graffiti is what made it such a feared sub culture and now with the rise of street art, it's become accessible to even the wimpyist of wimps.

I like many aspects of the core principles of graff while also loving how it's evolved and changed into an amazingly diverse group of people. I've seen the scene change here in Montreal so much that I'm curious to see where we will be in the next year. Hopefully we wont have any Mr. Brainwashes on our hands but it seems like an inevitable fate given how hype and internet fame plays more of a role now then street cred.

To show you a bit of this sub culture that I both love and hate, I've posted a bunch of videos showing the diversity and intenseness of graffiti culture.

Beef is a huge part graffiti and I find it mind blowing that it was interesting enough to the BBC for them to make a whole episode on it between two of England's most well known figures in graffiti.

Transit painting is where graffiti originated and over the years, transit systems have become better with security and quick at cleaning the lines. Now, instead of seeing the trains pull into a station covered in names and colours, movies are made to document the process and what ever short existence the painted car has. The sub culture is still very much alive and well if you look on youtube.

This is one of my favorite US graffiti documentaries covering some of the biggest names in the scene and a lot of the politics associated to graffiti. NOT STREET ART.

Kidult, what do I say about him? Ummm, nothing. Watch the video.

I found this video of CENO and all I can say is wooooooooooooooooww this guy loves vandalism.

Exit through the gift shop is about Banksy but is also about how street art has become a widely overrated/ over-hyped culture. A must watch to become a bit more savy about the art world and to stay on the look out for fakes.

David Choe is great because he's one of the most well known graffiti artists in the world who doesn't have a graffiti name. He is not afraid to admit he vandlizes and enjoys the art aspect of the scene as much as the mindless vandalism side of things. Here he is in the early years.

Crack and Shine is a great series documenting some of the most well known names in graffiti in the world. I love this episode about the scene in Paris because all the writers in the scene have some of the weirdest and most unconventional styles. They just love going out there and being different and love the energy of vandalism.
Horphé is by far one of my favorite writers these days.

∆ The Feathers ∆

I'm not a photographer but I appreciate photos a lot. I really love how people can capture emotions, feeling, moments and vibes and be able to share them with others. I'm sure that one day I'll try photography out more seriously but until then, I work with other people who are a bit more in tune with operating the lens.

Since August of last year, I've been finding feathers in times where I need validation. It's been a strange experience because I thought that at some point it would stop happening, but to this day, feathers appear in the most magical, strange and amazing moments. I don't look for them, they find me.

Around the beginning of this year, my collection had grown to over 20 feathers and the stories were getting weirder and more intense every time I found one. I kept on thinking about what I should do with them. Make a necklace? Make a collage? Throw them off a cliff?
No, I needed to make art with them. Each feather holds it's on energy of a special moment and I needed to pay them hommage in their ability to give me comfort. Why comfort? Because, with every step of life, lies deep uncertainty and to feel affirmed in my step, is a psychological privilege that I feel honoured to have experienced time and time again.

A little while ago, I met a woman named Lorette . We connected via Facebook and I discovered her photos. ( http://cargocollective.com/fluktekro / on FB- FLUKTE KRO SHOOT )

In trying to come up with an idea with what to do with all the feathers, I thought it might be cool to do some sort of photo shoot with the feathers and when I saw Lorette's photos, I knew I had to do it with her.

After many months of wanting to do the shoot, a couple of weeks ago, we finally got together in a studio and took the shots.

Much more could be said about what the photos mean to me or what the feathers have done to my life, but I want to let them speak for themselves.
The only thing I will say is this;
Art heals all wounds and vulnerability is beautiful.

-Cam

If you'd like to know even more about my feather story, you can listen to my last podcast where I recount a few of my most interesting feather-finding stories.
